Working with Melissa & Robert to plan and design their “non-wedding” wedding reception was such a treat! I knew from the moment I first spoke to Melissa, and she mentioned that they were actually already married (in a private candlelight ceremony in their home the weekend that Hurricane Sandy hit and days before she gave birth to their sons) and that they were the proud parents of 1 year old twin boys (cutest little boys ever, BTW), that this was going to be a party unlike any I had done before!
Melissa joked that they had always done things backwards so it seemed only fitting to have a reception 18 months after their actual wedding and the birth of their twin boys! This lady clearly had a sense of humor and really wanted to have some fun with the design. The party was held in the couple’s beautiful backyard where the centerpiece is a gorgeous in-ground pool surrounded by beautifully manicured lawns and a multi-level patio. While conceptualizing an initial design concept of an ‘adult pool party’, Melissa mentioned that one of their favorite hotels was the famed Raleigh Hotel in South Beach, Miami. One scroll through their website photos and we had set our design inspiration!
We used the hotel’s iconic bold black and white stripes, shades of coral and peach, and brown rattan beach furniture as our jumping off point. We incorporated these design elements into all facets of the event, from the initial guest impression of the completely custom invitation suite, to the mirrored, draped, and palm surrounded bar as guests first entered the yard, to sipping a tropical drink by the pool under a black and white striped umbrella! The most impressive of which were the custom black and white drapery swags that framed the 30ft high outdoor patio area and the custom pennant lampshades in a retro coral print. This patio area was the perfect location for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres before guests moved down into the tent to have a casual seafood-inspired dinner followed by an evening of dancing to one of New York City’s best dance bands. We carried the design inspirations into the tent as well with soft and breezy fabric swags, bold black chandeliers, brown rattan lounge furniture, and a black and white checkered dance floor! As guests left the party, they were each given a thank-you gift of a custom wrapped box featuring decadent chocolates from a local chocolatier. It was such an absolute pleasure to work with a client who was willing to have some fun, throw convention and tradition out the window, and create a truly unique and memorable guest experience!
Melissa & Robert, what a truly incredible experience Polished had working with you both! Your willingness to have a whole lot of fun with design, break some traditions, and throw a kick-ass party for your friends and family is unparalleled! We can’t wait to be a part of the next one!
